Existing solar evaporation ponds in NFC are surface based and basically used for concentrating / solidifying the various effluents from chemical plants prior to their disposal. In the recent past Telangana State Pollution Control Board issued a directive for closure of all the existing Solar Evaporation Ponds and gave consent for Over Ground Solar Evaporation Ponds (OGSEP) in their place. The OGSEPs were inaugurated by Dr Dinesh Srivastava, Chairman & Chief Executive, NFC on 24/12/2020.

The design of the ponds is unique as the collection trench in the central portion of either side tank prevented the continuous beam up to the columns. Hence, U shape beams were to be provided in the central column portion. The OGSEP was constructed on an existing solar evaporation pond hence related settlement issues were addressed in the design. The arrangement provided an opportunity to visualise any leakage which otherwise in the old arrangement would have gone unnoticed. Polypropylene Glass lining has been provided to protect concrete surfaces of the tanks from erosive action of stored acid / alkali chemicals.
