Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) is relentlessly fuelling the nuclear power program of India. To meet the fuel requirement of the upcoming Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, NFC is setting up a new facility, Nuclear Fuel Complex - Kota.
NFC-Kota is a green field project being established at, Rawatbhata, Rajasthan.This project is established as an extension to NFC-Hyderabad and is based on the technological procedures adopted at NFC-Hyderabad.
Subsequent to clearances from various agencies viz., Ministry of Environment and Forests, Cabinet, Siting consent by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board, No-Objection-Certificate from Wild Life authorities (NBWL), challenging site grading works for NFC-Kota commenced. This was followed by start of construction works for Plant & Non-plant buildings on grant of Consent for Construction from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
Major facilities of the project include Melt shop; Forge & Extrusion shop; Pilgering shop; Tube finishing, cleaning and heat treatment facilities; Uranium powder, pelletising and assembly plants; tool room; maintenance workshop; etc. NFC-Kota project features state-of-art facilities, automated systems, automatic guided vehicles, automatic storage and retrieval system, etc. to give a vital boost to the nuclear fuel manufacturing. Quality Assurance Section ensures the quality at many intermediate stages and at the final product stage. NFC commitment towards environmental protection shines forth in all its endeavours. Right from construction stage to production stage, NFC leads the way as an eco-friendly organization. All systems are in place to ensure a healthy environment for employees and general public.
As on date, most of the civil works for Plant & Non-plant buildings are completed and erection & commissioning of equipment is ongoing in full swing. Cold commissioning of various equipment like Electrical Package, Hydraulic Presses, Electron Beam Welding units, Forge Press, Extrusion Press, Pilger Mills, Vacuum Annealing Furnaces, Ultrasonic tube testing machine, 5-Axis Die Grinding Machine, 4-Axis CNC Milling machine, CNC Centreless Grinding Machine, Powder Plant Package, Roll Press, High temperature Sintering Furnaces, Centreless Grinding Machines, End Cap Welding Machines, End Plate Welding Machines, Special Purpose Double Head Turning Machines, etc. are either completed or under progress at advance stage.
On 25.04.2023, satisfactory demonstration of fuel bundle assembly was carried out to check the performance of some assembly shop machinery after obtaining regulatory permission. The first fuel bundle of NFC-Kota was ceremonially handed over by Chief Executive, NFC to Chairman & Managing Director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) in the presence of Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission & Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy.
NFC accelerates the marking of Indian footprint in global arena of nuclear fuel manufacturing with its determination to provide congenial environment for employees working at all levels. NFC-Kota township has been planned with amenities such as 24x7 security, dispensary, school, play ground, community hall, shopping complex, auditorium, etc. for the benefit of the families of its employees. Chambal Vihar Guest House at NFC-Kota township premises is already inaugurated & functional since February-2023. First phase of construction for residential towers is also started.
